Rio de Janeiro 1962 archive footage

Archival footage shot by an amateur filmmaker visiting Brazil, probably in 1962.

It contains footage of Rio de Janeiro:

(00:00 – 00:47) Vehicles running at Aterro do Flamengo and view of buildings in Glória neighborhood.
(00:48 – 01:12) Partial view of Passeio Público and Cinelândia, along with the obelisk at the end of Avenida Rio Branco (Rio Branco avenue).
(01:13 – 01:29) Buses and cars at Aterro do Flamengo.
(01:41 – 01:48) MAM (Museu de Arte Moderna).
(01:57 – 02:44) Trams running in the border of Passeio Público.
(03:43 – 04:06) Brazilian Navy buildings.
(04:07 – 04:36) Buses and parked cars at Praça XV de Novembro.
(04:37 – 05:50) Street marketplace somewhere.
(05:51 – 07:06) People waiting for the beginning of a football match, at Maracanã stadium.
(07:07 -08:31) People at Copacabana Beach and cars running in Avenida Atlântica. One can see lots of sand carried to the street by big sea waves: that happened in the beginning of April, 1962.
(08:32 – 10:11) Buildings around Praça XV de Novembro and ferries that link Rio de Janeiro city to Niterói city, across Guanabara Bay (a 20 minutes journey). The footage was taken aboard some of those ferries.
(10:12 – 10:53) Cars and buses running at Praia do Flamengo (Flamengo Beach avenue).
(10:54 – 11:05) Hotel Glória (the white building), one of the most known and elegant of the city.
(11:29 – 11:35) Igreja da Glória (Glória Church), on the top of Outeiro da Glória (Glória Hill).
(11:49 – 12:03) Carnival scenes at Avenida Rio Branco.
(12:04 – 13:34) Scenes of box offices, parking lot, access ramps, surroundings and people at Maracanã stadium.
(13:35 – 14:29) Very unusual scenes of a sloth at an unknown place.
(14:30 – 15:39) Enseada de Botafogo (Botafogo Cove).
(15:40 – 17:40) Carnival scenes at Avenida Rio Branco.
(17:41 – 19:24) Scenes at Rio de Janeiro Zoo.
(19:25 – 20:06) Arcos da Lapa (Lapa Aqueduct) and Santa Teresa tram running above it. This aqueduct was built in 1744 to bring fresh water from Sumaré mountain to downtown Rio. At the end of the 19th Century it became useless and in its top was built a tram line to link downtown Rio to Santa Teresa neighborhood. This tram line does exist until today and is a very known tourist attraction in Rio.
(20:06 – 23:40) Scenes at Rio de Janeiro Zoo.
(23:41 – 24:09) Panoramic view taken from the Corcovado Summit, showing Baía da Guanabara (Guanabara Bay), Enseada de Botafogo (Botafogo Cove), Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) and Flamengo, Botafogo and Urca neighborhoods. Across the bay one can see Niterói city.
(24:10 – 24:15) Partial view of Copacabana.
(24:16 – 24:41) Partial view of Ipanema and Lagoa neighborhoods, along with Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon).
(25:54 – 26:03) Corcovado Summit with the famous Jesus Christ statue in its top.
(26:18 – 26:32) partial view of Hipódromo da Gávea, a place where horse races occur.

About the date, a man who lived in Rio in those years kindly told me:

“at 05:27 there’s a tram, line 4 – Pa. Vermelha, and this line ran out of existence on September 29th, 1962. Starting 9:42 there’s a lot of sand in the streets of Copacabana, carried by big sea waves. This occurred on April 8th, 1962. At 11:06 in the background there’s an elevated avenue that was inaugurated in 1960. And there are also scenes of Carnival, an event that use to occur on February and exceptionally in the beginning of March. So, I believe that the footage was taken between February and April, 1962.”
