Archival footage shot by an amateur filmmaker while visiting New Zealand in 1959.
It contains stock footage of Wellington, the capital of the Country: panoramas of the city and the port, Midland Hotel (destroyed in 1972), the tram (service ended in May 1964) driving in the streets, Johnston Street, and more.
Comment by Mr Keith McGavin of the Wellington Tramway Museum: at 1’21” a route 3 tram is shown in Lambton Quay passing the Midland Hotel. This specific model (a Mk.1 double saloon) and number of tram was withdrawn about 1959 and the last route 3 trams ceased by March 1961. I would say this part of the footage is not later than 1959.
